What is an article?
An article is information, opinions, and/or ideas on specific topics that have been created by the users.
What is a forum?
A forum works like a bulletin board where users may submit postings to respond to a subject or to generate discussion about a given subject that is already in existence or one of their own design
What is a thread?
A thread is more or less a continuous chain of postings on a single topic.
What is a post?
A post is a message sent to multiple users of a site (usually within the context of a forum) and is normally done so indiscriminately. Posts are generated when the user feels that there will be significant interest to a large proportion of the audience of the forum or message board.
What is a view?
The number of views represents the number of times that a specific message or thread has been read or looked at by users. The more views that a topic has generally indicates that the topic is of high interest to users.
What is a reply?
A reply is when a user responds to something that has been previously posted within the thread to either rebut or agree with what has been written.
What are links?
Hyperlinks, more commonly known as links, are found on the navigation bars and embedded within text. Clicking on a hyperlink—they are highlighted words or web addresses found throughout the site—will automatically take the user to the page or site that is electronically connected to that link. Using links is a faster form of navigation because it enables the user to move quickly and efficiently through a site without having to know numerous URLs.
What are downloads?
A download is the transfer of a file or files from a central computer to another computer or a computer at a remote location (a computer that is using the Internet).
What is a URL?
A URL, Uniform Resource Locator, is the address of a web page on the Internet.
What is ICQ?
ICQ is a proprietary chat system that was one of the first forms of instant messaging it has since been sold to AOL. The name ICQ is derived from a play on “cq”, the radio signal for seeking conversation.
What is a user?
A user is anyone that is a registered member of the website, in this case the Alumni Online Community. Users are able to post messages, write articles, and chat with other users of the site.
How do I register for a username?
Registering for a member username and account is easy. Simply click on the link “here” that is listed underneath the login information. That link will forward the user to a screen that will ask for an e-mail account and a username. Fill out the fields provided, after you have done this a password will be sent to the e-mail address that was provided.
What is the “Remember Me” function? Should I use it?
The “Remember Me” function saves username and password information on the computer that you are logged into. It is fine to use this function if you are on your own personal computer. Computers that can be freely accessed by the public (those at a public library, college, work, etc.) should not have this selection chosen as it will enable anyone that accesses the Alumni Online Community web page to utilize the your account and have access to your information.
Where can I change my password at?
Once you have logged on to the site, click on the EDIT PROFILE link. The link will take you to a new page. At the top of this page are two fields that are labeled PASSWORD and CONFIRM PASSWORD. Type in the new password that you would like to use in both fields, remember to type carefully as all that will show is asterisks (*). After you have entered your new password click on the SUBMIT CHANGES link. This will update your profile and save the changes that you made to your account password.
How do I edit my profile?
Login in using your username and password; click on the EDIT PROFILE link. This will take you to a screen with numerous fields that you may edit, including your personal website, gender, age, profession, country of residence, add/delete your avatar/picture, edit your signature, etc… Once you have made all the changes that you want click on the SUBMIT CHANGES link. This will update your profile and save all the changes that you made.
What is a signature?
Your signature is something that will show up at the end of every post that you make on the site. Signatures can be quotes or pictures, this is dependent upon what you want to say; remember, as with everything on this site keep your signature clean and non-offensive.
What is instant messaging (IM)?
Instant messaging (IM-ing) is the sending back and forth of messages with someone on the Internet. The messages are sent instantly from your computer to that of the person that you are conversing with. Using instant messaging is like using the telephone; the only difference is that instead of talking into a receiver you are typing text messages on your computer and sending them through the Internet where they will instantly end up on the screen of the computer of the person that you are “chatting” with. Companies like Yahoo! and AOL provide instant messaging services.
How do I get an IM account?
To get an IM account go to either the Yahoo! or AOL home page and click on their “messenger” link. They will guide you through a step-by-step process to set up your instant messenger account.
What is the RECOMMEND link for?
The RECOMMEND link is so that you may send an e-mail to a friend that you think might enjoy this community web page and inform them of its existence and give them the URL for the page.
